A Wardrobe Therapy Session with Your Closet

Ladies, let's have a heart-to-heart with that ever-expanding, possibly even sentient entity in your bedroom—the closet! It's time to declutterize that fashion jungle, and in the process, liberate not just your clothes, but your self-esteem too!

Embrace the Change

First, let's get this out there: it's perfectly okay for your body to go on a journey of its own. We're not designed by default to remain the same size throughout our lives. Between those ice cream binges, life-altering experiences, and hormonal roller coasters, your body is bound to undergo a transformation or two (or ten). Whether you've had babies, danced through menopause, or just made a truce with gravity, your body has been through a lot.

So, if that pair of jeans from high school isn't flattering anymore, it's not you; it's just that those jeans are stuck in the past. It's time to send them to the 'nostalgia' section (the donate pile) and make room for outfits that make you feel your best!.

The Closet Diagnosis

Begin your wardrobe therapy with a closet diagnosis. Take everything out and survey the battlefield. You'll probably find items you forgot existed (surprise!), and some that bring back memories of questionable fashion decisions (hello, Juicy Couture® velour tracksuits).

The Purging Process

The next step is the purge, and I promise, it's liberating! Invite your best friend over for support, a bottle of wine, and a 'brutally honest' fashion show. Dance around in your old, too-tight dresses, give them a final farewell kiss, and then toss them in the "donate" pile.  If it doesn't make you feel like a rockstar or a boss, it's time to let it go!

Your closet should be your personal collection, a curated exhibit of pieces that reflect your unique style, no matter how it has evolved. Remember, you're not just cleaning your closet; you're giving yourself the gift of space, both physical and emotional. The clothes that no longer serve you can find new life with someone who needs them.

The Organizational Symphony

Now that you've weeded out the excess, it's time to organize your closet like a pro. Get some cute storage bins, matching hangers and dividers (you can shop my favorite products below*). Categorize your clothes – group pants with pants, dresses with dresses, and so on. Color code if you’re really motivated!

This is the part where you can unleash your inner control freak – trust me, there's something strangely satisfying about a perfectly organized closet, it's therapeutic!

Future-Proofing Your Wardrobe

Finally, as you add new pieces to your collection, choose items that are versatile and adaptable. Invest in classics and statement pieces, and mix them up to create fresh looks. Don't forget that your style can evolve with you, just like your body.

Remember, your wardrobe should be a reflection of your ever-changing self. So, let's toast to embracing life's natural changes, celebrating your beautiful self, and rocking that declutterized closet like a boss!

Need a list of steps to take?  I got you!

Step 1: Declutter

Start by taking everything out of your closet. This gives you a clean slate to work with. If you haven't worn something in the past year or it no longer fits, it's time to consider letting it go. Create separate piles for items to keep, donate, or toss.

Step 2: Clean and Repair

Before putting anything back in, take the time to clean your closet space. Dust the shelves, wipe down surfaces, and vacuum the floor. If there are any needed repairs, like loose hangers or damaged hooks, take care of them now. A clean and well-maintained closet provides a fresh start.

Step 3: Organize by Category

Categorize your clothing and accessories. This makes it easier to find what you need. Common categories include tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Within each category, you can further organize by color or season, depending on your preference.

Step 4: Invest in Storage Solutions

To make the most of your closet space, invest in storage solutions like bins, shelves, hanging organizers, and matching hangers. Use clear containers or labels to keep smaller items like belts, scarves, and jewelry visible and easily accessible. Consider using under-shelf or over-the-door organizers to maximize vertical space.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance

Maintaining an organized closet is an ongoing process. To keep it tidy, follow these habits:

  • Periodically review your items and declutter as needed. If you buy something new, consider removing an old item to maintain balance.

  • Return items to their designated spots after each use.

  • Seasonal rotations: Store off-season clothes in bins or a separate closet to free up space for the current season's wardrobe.

  • Use hooks for  items you plan to wear again before laundry day.

By following these five simple steps and practicing regular maintenance, you'll have an organized closet that makes getting dressed a breeze and helps you feel more in control of your living space!

 Now, go strut your stuff!
